Salt Damp & Humidity Repair in Tavira: Permanent Solutions for Coastal Walls

Salt bloom, bubbling paint, crumbling plaster and black mould. We find what is causing it before we touch a brush, treat the wall with anti-salt or anti-mould products, replace damaged render, and finish with breathable paint that lets the wall dry out.

Salt damp and humidity repair in Tavira – moisture inspection and diagnosis on a coastal wall.

What we diagnose and repair

The four damp problems we meet most often in Tavira homes, and what a proper repair involves for each.

Salt Damp (Rising Damp)

White fluffy bloom on walls, bubbling paint, and crumbling plaster near the floor. Caused by salt-laden groundwater rising through capillary action. We cut out damaged plaster, apply salt-neutralising chemicals, and use vapour-permeable renders.

Penetrating Damp

Water seeping through walls from rain, leaking gutters, or cracks. Often found near windows, doors, and roofs. We identify the source, repair the leak, then treat and repaint the interior and exterior surfaces.

Condensation & Mould

Black spots on walls, peeling wallpaper, and musty smells. Usually on north-facing walls or behind furniture in unheated rooms. We treat with fungicidal washes, improve ventilation, and use anti-condensation paints.

Efflorescence (Salt Bloom)

White or greyish powder on the surface of bricks, render, or stone. Caused by water carrying salts to the surface. We remove the salts, apply a salt-blocking primer, and seal with a breathable topcoat.

How we fix damp walls for good

Step 1: Diagnosis. We inspect the wall, test the moisture level, and identify the source of the damp. If it’s rising damp, we check the ground level and drainage. If it’s penetrating damp, we find the leak or crack.

Step 2: Preparation & Treatment. We cut out damaged plaster, render or brick. We apply anti-salt chemicals, fungicidal washes or waterproofing membranes, depending on the diagnosis. We let the wall dry and the treatment cure.

Step 3: Re-render & Prime. We apply a salt-resistant, breathable render or filler, then a dedicated damp-proof primer that seals the surface and stops salts from migrating.

Step 4: Paint & Finish. We apply two coats of vapour-permeable, anti-mould paint, designed to let moisture escape while keeping rain out. We clean the site and send you a full photo report of the whole process.

We never just paint over damp. We fix the cause, treat the wall, and then paint. That’s why our repairs last.

Questions about damp and humidity repair

Salt damp (rising damp) is moisture rising from the ground through the walls, carrying salts from the soil and sea air. It causes white efflorescence, peeling paint, and crumbling plaster. We treat it by: 1) cutting out damaged plaster, 2) applying anti-salt chemicals, 3) applying a salt-resistant render, 4) sealing with a vapour-permeable primer, and 5) painting with breathable paint. This stops the salts from coming back through the new finish.

Yes, always. We clean the surface with a fungicidal wash to kill the spores, apply a stain-blocking primer, and then use an anti-mould, breathable paint. If the mould comes from condensation or poor ventilation, we advise on ventilation and can fit passive vents to keep the wall dry long-term.

A single wall repair (cut out, treat, render, prime, paint) usually takes 1 to 2 days, plus around 24 hours of drying time for the render and treatment. A whole room typically takes 3 to 4 days. The written quote gives you the timeline.

Because most painters just paint over it. They don’t treat the cause: the salts, the moisture source or the condensation. We diagnose the root cause, treat the wall properly, and only then paint. If the source is outside the wall, such as a leaky gutter or a broken pipe, we either fix it ourselves or tell you exactly what needs doing before we start.

Yes. Our workmanship on damp repairs is guaranteed for 12 months. If the damp returns in the same spot within a year, we come back and re-treat it at no cost, provided the moisture source hasn’t changed (a new leak, for example). This is on top of your statutory rights.
