Why wood and metal in the Algarve need specialist care

Wood. The Algarve sun bleaches and dries out timber in months. Decking splinters, pergolas turn grey, and exterior furniture cracks. We sand back to bare wood, apply a UV-blocking primer, and finish with marine-grade varnish or oil that penetrates and protects from within.

Metal. The salt air from the Ria Formosa and the Atlantic corrodes iron, steel and aluminium. Gates seize, railings rust, and balconies pit. We grind back rust to bare metal, apply a rust-inhibiting primer, and finish with a tough enamel that withstands salt spray and UV.

The combined challenge. Most properties have wood and metal together: a pergola with metal brackets, a deck with steel railings, a gate with timber slats. We treat each material with its own system, so everything lasts and still looks like one piece.

We’ve restored pergolas in Cabanas, decking in Santa Luzia, and gates across Tavira. We know which oils work on Iroko, which primers stick to galvanised steel, and how to match finishes so everything flows.

Our wood and metal restoration process

1

Inspection & Quote

We assess the condition of the wood and metal. We check for rot, rust, and structural issues, then give you a fixed quote for the full restoration.

2

Sanding & Preparation

For wood: we sand back to bare timber, fill cracks, and treat for rot. For metal: we grind back rust and smooth the surface. We protect the surrounding area.

3

Priming & Treatment

Wood gets a UV-blocking primer and rot-resistant treatment. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting primer and salt-neutralising treatment. We let each cure fully.

4

Finishing & Protection

We apply two coats of marine-grade varnish for wood and UV-resistant enamel for metal. We clean the site and send you the photo report and invoice.

Wood and metal restoration: priced per item, or by the hour for small jobs

We price each gate, pergola or deck as a single item, in writing. Smaller jobs, like a few shutters or a railing touch-up, can also be done by the hour. Varnish and enamel are billed at shop price.

Questions about wood and metal painting

We use marine-grade, UV-resistant varnishes and oils designed for the Algarve climate. For hardwoods like Iroko or Teak, we use penetrating oils that feed the wood. For softwoods and pergolas, we use a clear or tinted marine varnish with UV blockers. We always recommend a finish based on the wood type, its location (sun vs. shade), and your desired look.

We grind rust back to bare metal with angle grinders and wire brushes. Then we apply a rust-inhibiting primer (often zinc-rich) and a salt-neutralising treatment, followed by two coats of a tough, UV-resistant enamel. Where corrosion has eaten through, we may cut out and weld in new sections, always quoted separately before we start.

With our marine-grade finishes, decking and pergolas typically need recoating every 3 to 5 years, depending on sun exposure and foot traffic. Oiled hardwoods may need a refresh every 2 to 3 years on south-facing surfaces. Our photo report includes maintenance advice, so you know when to call us back.

Yes. We can colour-match existing varnish, paint, or stain from a sample or a photo. For metal, we can mix any RAL colour. For wood, we can match stains and oils to your existing finish. We always do a test patch before committing to the full job.

Always. Sanding removes the grey, weathered layer and opens the grain so the oil or varnish can soak in. We sand to a smooth finish, sweep and clean the deck, and only then apply the treatment. Skip the sanding and the finish peels or fades far sooner.
