What your wall is telling you
Different cracks mean different problems. Here is how to read the signs, and what we do about each one.
Fine Hairline Cracks
Thin, superficial cracks in the render or paint. Usually caused by minor shrinkage or temperature change. We fill and prime them before painting.
Hollow or Drumming Render
A hollow sound when you tap the wall. The render has separated from the brick. We cut out the loose section, re-apply render, and let it cure before painting.
Flaking or Blistering Paint
Paint bubbling or peeling in sheets. Usually caused by moisture behind the render or salt pushing through. We treat the cause, repair the render, and repaint.
Structural Cracks
Wide, stepped, or diagonal cracks. These need structural assessment first. We'll tell you honestly if it's a painting job or if you need an engineer.
How we repair render and cracks
Step 1: Diagnosis. We inspect the crack or flaking area. We tap the wall to find hollow sections, check for salt or moisture, and identify the cause. You receive a written quote before any repair starts.
Step 2: Preparation. We cut out damaged render to solid edges, remove loose material, and treat the area for salt or mould if present. We prime the exposed brick or block.
Step 3: Repair. We apply a new render or filler, matching the original profile. For cracks, we use a flexible filler that moves with the building. We let it cure fully.
Step 4: Sanding & Priming. We sand the repaired area smooth, blend the edges, and apply a primer suitable for the finish. The wall is now ready for painting.
We never paint over a crack without repairing it. That’s how you get a lasting finish.

Questions about crack and render repair
You can, but it won’t last. Most cracks in Algarve facades are caused by movement, temperature change, or salt behind the render. If you just fill and paint, the crack will reappear within months. We diagnose the cause, use flexible fillers, and prepare the surface properly so the repair lasts.
Tap the wall gently with the handle of a screwdriver or a coin. If it sounds hollow, like a drum, the render has come away from the brick behind it. That section has to be cut out and replaced, because paint over hollow render cracks and peels quickly.
Yes, but with lime-based or breathable renders, not cement. Old buildings in Tavira’s historic centre need materials that breathe, and cement traps moisture and makes the problem worse. We match the repair to the original wall.
A single crack repair takes 1 to 2 hours plus drying time for the filler. A larger render area (up to 2m²) takes a day, plus 24 to 48 hours for the render to cure before painting. The written quote gives you the timeline.
We’ll tell you honestly. If the crack is wide (over 5mm), stepped or diagonal, it may be structural movement, and a structural engineer or builder should look at it first. We don’t repair structural cracks. We repair the cosmetic damage once the structural issue is fixed.

Photograph the cracks or the flaking patch close up and from a few metres away. The photos give us a first idea, and the repair is priced when we see the wall.
